Folk  Art  Paintings and Folk Art Portraits
Early American Folk Art Paintings and Folk Art Portraits were commonly done in various styles.
One style was referred to as
"primitive". Features were plain. Few people smiled. The style varied
from artist to artist. It was quite common for both young boys and also girls to be painted wearing
dresses.
There are two ways to distinguish a boy from a girl in these paintings. One way that is to look at the
part in the hair. More often than not a boy's hair was parted on the side, and a girl's hair was parted
in the middle. However, this was not always the case. There is another, more proven, way to tell.
An examination of props, or other items in the painting, can be a good clue. Girls were normally
painted holding dolls, flowers, cats, or other items usually associated with a little girl. While boys
would be painted with items such as balls, dogs, whips, toy guns, or other items associated with a
boy. Another style was "
realistic".  I paint in both styles, as exhibited in my gallery. I can do custom
paintings or portraits in either style.
